Materials from the 2010 ABIM Foundation Forum Now Available Online

How can we transform medical education and training to meet the needs of patients and society? Such was the topic of the 2010 ABIM Foundation Forum, a three-day event that gathered physicians, policymakers, health care leaders, residents and medical students to discuss the current and future state of medical education and training.

Among those charged with developing a social compact needed for a high-performing, evolving health care system were Karen Davis, PhD, President, The Commonwealth Fund; Darrell Kirch, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer, Association of American Medical Colleges and Thomas Nasca, Chief Executive Officer, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. A full list of Forum participants can be found on the ABIM Foundation website.

Spotlighted at the Forum was the work of several early adopters of innovations in medical education and training. Included among these presenters were practicing physicians and medical educators whose innovations span both undergraduate and graduate medical education and training and represent internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, surgery and anesthesiology. The innovations span a wide range of topics including:

Assessment processes
- Competencies beyond knowledge
- Overall redesign
- Professionalism and Culture and
- Settings

Also available online is the Forum agenda and goals, including slides from the three days of presentations, as well as a bibliography of background materials.
